Audio synch issues on Netflix when Recording Enabled
-
I have tested this on Netflix (not Youtube) on the latest version of the extension. I have tested on a Windows 11 Desktop with 64gb RAM and a 5950x, and a Macbook Pro on Monterey with 64mb RAM and a M1 Max, so it's not a memory issue. It occurs on both Chrome and Naver Whale. I have no other extensions.
When enable recording is on, the audio on Netflix is out of synch, delayed about 1-2 seconds, always. It may get worse using recall mode and skip mode, it's hard to tell (otherwise those functions work 99% of the time). I tested this on the shows Meteor Garden in Simplified Mandarin and Sweet Home in Korean. This is a consistent problem, it occurs 100% of the time once recording is enabled.

@JuliusMigaku Hi Julius, sorry to ping you directly on a bug thread but I haven't seen an update here from Migaku's team in quite some time and from what I can tell this is affecting a non-trivial number of people. Scrolling through the replies and I also see a number of users who specifically stopped their subscription because of this issue. It's also a fair assumption that a number of people have stopped their subscription because of this without posting here.
I have also supported Migaku for almost two years now and as long-term customer I would really appreciate some insight into whether or not this is prioritized as an a issue. I understand replicating and this must be difficult, and thus fixing it must be even more of a challenge.
Lower in the thread I did recommend some work-around, or band-aid solutions that, while admittedly are suggested with complete naivety and no knowledge of the code base, if possible, could lower the severity of the issue by simply making it less noticeable.
Would appreciate some insight into this from Migaku's side of things if possible. Thanks so much in advance.

@anon-1f7 Doesn't fix the issue for Chrome afaik
-
Turning off hardware acceleration in brave solved this for me
-
@anon-31k and just two hours later after taking a break it is back to being a second off. I don't get it.
-
@jasminetea Ok yeah like when I posted the other day as well as last night it was more than a second off, and today when I went to sentence mine it is completely fine. Same result for the two laptops I have at home for each time point. I wonder if it the timing is off for the people with the issue on the same days/time for everyone?
-
@anon-31k I also notice that the severity seems to be random. Sometimes it's barely noticeable, other times it's quite extreme.
-
I seem to be getting this issue as well with Netflix/Japanese, but sporadically depending on the day. I am using Mac M1 with the Chrome browser. Unfortunately, Migaku is not really usable with this issue.
-
I've encountered this bug from when I started using Migaku over a year ago now, and still have the bug to this day.
It does drastically reduce the enjoyability of using Migaku and I kinda just figured the Migaku team would be working on fixing this issue as a high priority since it's so impactful and a non-trivial number of people have reported / are watching this thread.
I've tried all of the suggestions in this thread multiple times over, but at the end of the day, I just Enable Recording when I want to record something and Disable Recording when I just want to watch the show.
I understand this must be a difficult bug to reproduce but there could potentially be a number of band-aid fixes to make Migaku more pleasant to use while a proper solution is found.
- A hotkey for enabling and disabling recording, if possible, would make this less annoying to deal with. As every time I want to record a card, I have to un-fullscreen, click the enable recording, record it, disable recording, then fullscreen again. The time spent doing this adds up, and for an app that's supposed to help optimize my time making anki cards it's unfortunate.
- If possible, a setting that automates the process of enabling recording only when recording and disabling it afterwards. I'm not entirely sure why it's necessary to have the users themselves "enable recording", I'm sure for most users just clicking it once isn't a big deal. But for the users that do encounter this issue, it seems extra pertinent. If there isn't an explicit technical limitation for Migaku automating the enabling and disabling of recording, Migaku handling this itself would be nice. In other words, a setting I can toggle via the Migaku Settings Menu that, when set, "enables recording" when I click "Create Card" and "disables recording" afterwards.
Anyway, hope suggestions are considered.

I've wanted to use this plug in for so long on Netflix but after over a year I'm still unable to watch anything without this audio lag. I'm using Chrome, I have the netflix test op in toggled to off as recommended and I'm on a desktop so the plug in your laptop fix isn't really applicable. Super unfortunate that I seem to be in the subcategory of people who just can't use this tool on Netflix.

Not sure if anyone is still having this issue, but I had this recently (april 2023) and turning this setting off fixed it for me: https://www.netflix.com/DoNotTest

@anon-1hk From what I see they are struggling to replicate it which makes it next to impossible to debug. They're probably haven't replied because they don't have any further updates on it, of course this is just speculation.

@level-up Hi guys, I still really appreciate what you do and I know bug hunting is a bit of a nightmare when you can't reliably replicate it yourself.
I've had this issue on MacOS and Windows.
With Spanish and Japanese.
After installing and reinstalling, messing with padding, messing with hardware accelation and turning the recording on and off again.I would love to continue to support you but the devs in my old company including myself were laid off recently and it's meant that I can't afford to support a product or project that I can't use for its intended purpose when money is so tight.
I still have good words for you and would recommend people try out a trial of your software because it may work for them but unfortunately with how things are I'm going to have to let it go.
I've been with Migaku since the beginning and it's been wonderful to see you guys grow as a team and a company. I love this software. The card creation is the bee's knees and it's going to be a lot less fun without it but it's very frustrating to deal with syncing issues and I can't get past it.
I find that this happens often when I set the mode to reading or if I skip the silence between lines by having the video speed up but it can happen when everything is set to the defaults as well. Sometimes it gets stuck on a line and keeps replaying that line and won't skip past it. Sometimes no matter what lines I choose to create a card from it skips back to a line. Other times I can get around this by creating a card from multiple lines but this doesn't always work either. I've noticed this happens on some TV shows but not all. On some Netflix shows this bug happens consistently on the same lines so it's definitely something funky with Netflix's stuff but I don't know how your software works so I couldn't really say how. I've never experienced this on YouTube but I do prefer Netflix.
If this gets fixed I'll be back when I have a new job. I want to see you guys succeed but I hope you understand that I can't afford it anymore but Instill appreciate your hard work. All the best guys, thank you for the support and value you have provided me with for a good two years! Well done on the successful round of funding and the new projects, it can only mean good things for your future.
I hope you all have a lovely holiday period and an even better new year. I really mean this when I say I wish you all the best. Thank you guys for everything. - Level Up

Can someone give a timeline to solving this? I would like to start using Migaku, but am extremely hesitant due to this bug being left unfixed for a long time, and because there have been no responses from the team in many months.
-
I just signed up for the trial and immediately got out of sync audio on Japanese Netflix using Chrome on a Macbook pro. It's pretty severe and not usable as it is.
I verified that monitoring mode is off in Netflix, as is hardware acceleration in Chrome. The problem disappears after I turn off recording.
-
Any update? I have had this problem for months now. Mac + Chrome, + Netflix. I posted about this recently with no response.
-
As an update to my previous post, I want to note that you can see the desync happen the second recording is enabled. The video will continue playing as normal, but the audio will briefly cut. Once the audio comes back it will be out of sync. Similarly, you can pause the video and the audio will continue playing briefly after the video playback has stopped.
-
Is this actively being worked on? I'd argue that this is a critical issue as it directly impacts the enjoyability of immersion when using Migaku. This does not only impact Netflix, it impacts YouTube as well. The fact that I am able to reproduce it across both strongly suggests that the issue lies with Migaku. If you are unable to reproduce the issue, then I'd be more than happy to set up a remote debugging session, but seriously 5 months is an extremely long time for a bug like this to remain in production.

any update on this? just signed up for migaku and sad to see how buggy it is (primarily this issue is disappointing)

I just changed my Netflix plan from standard to premium and then encountered this problem. I don't know if this is the cause.
